Sunday Market @ Pondy

Payment Book Stall In Front Of Jambu Book Shop

Weekly markets have always been a confluence of people from different walks of life. Riots of colors mashed up with economical offerings, a wide variety and huge bargaining opportunities are just few attractions.

But a person like me has other reasons to be there - to observe 'people-mix' of the city and to feel the city 'raw' and without any 'cosmetic effects'. Such weekly markets are the best gateways to know the city you are in. I had lived in Pondicherry for more than two years and has loved the quality of life it offers - peaceful, away from the mad rush and pollution of big metros like Delhi & Mumbai.

Like most Indian cities Pondicherry too host a weekly market- Sunday Market.
It stretches long on MG Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road and the point where these two roads cross other is the central point of this market. I had always made a point to be there and take notes and click photos before freaking at pondy beach.
My shopping from this weekly markets were mostly the CDs of old movies some of which I grabbed @ Rs. 5 per CD ! And not to say books and old editions of Readers Digest. Sipping hot or coffee while shopping is another thing which is a treat.

For someone like me who prefers to live alone and be with oneself it was a good way to spend long never ending evenings followed by a dinner at Anand Bhavan and finally before heading for my room to have darshan of Lord Ganesha at Manakula Vinaygar temple.

Invite you to see pondy market through the pictures clicked by me randomly at different points of time. Follow the link :

God's Gate Keeper

In Frame : Rani. Do we need to say who she is ? Rani is the elephant at Manarkul Vinayagar Temple at Pondicherry (Pondy) whom one can see the entrance of the temple. She has been trained to shower blessings on devotees who offer her money and eatables especially banana. On festivals she is beautifully decorated with colorful usually red and golden yellow robes and cloth sheets and carries the idols of Lord Ganesha along with the religious processions which passes through prominent streets of Pondy notable among them is JN Sreat and MG Road. Clicked in Aug 2008 at Manarkul Temple, Pondy during my first visit to the temple.

Change Agents In Our Society

Did you share yourself today ? Times Life : 2 May, 2010-05-18 In this artcle Indrani Rajkhowa Banerjee brings into life a very inspiring account of ordinary people who are amazingly trying to create a difference in lives of those to whom small things we never care of can bring a lot of difference. Consider few instance, taken from the said article and other sources: Someone in Mumbai distributes footwear at traffic signals to barefoot people, another man collects the leftover food at weddings to feed hungry kids, in Delhi a gentleman distributes drinking water in shanties of west Delhi, another person never leaves home without packets of glucose biscuits for poor kids, a young journalist instead of visiting church every sunday religiously visits nearby home for aged people and spends her time with them………… A guy collects rickety and torn out bicycles and repairs them and gives them to school kids who otherwise would have dropped as parents are reluctant to send kids far away to schoo...
