Talking Photos

Why we click pictures, shoot videos or write? Probably, we want to record the moments which we feel are important in our lives. Many of us have hundreds of photos, videos and writings which we cherish as the one of the most valuable possession and by seeing them at various stages in our life we feel connected to people and able to travel back in time.

I know many people who will never leave home without camera or with a writing pad and pen. The moment they see something worthy of ‘capturing’ they will click or pen down the thoughts or observations, religiously to avoid missing it. Some of them will blog them while some treat their possessions as private and will show up only to close circle of family and friends only.

A close observation of the pictures clicked by people throws up interesting facts about their work and lifestyles. May be that’s why they say a pictures say thousand words!

Those who usually click wildlife pictures are mostly top notch professionals under forties and are either single or have a very small family. They have passion for experimenting and love to take risks in life. Though such herd is very small in numbers in India but steadily rising.

Then there are people who can ‘write’ a novel or story with pictures. Usually they have made photography as their profession and have singalled the arrival of photo-journalism. Such people are thoughtful and have ability to connect with masses of all sorts. Their subjects will revolve mostly around social aspects of life. (One such story is ‘koovaganam - Festival of Eunuchs by K.Venkatesh, on this subject there is documentary also telecasted on Discovery Channel)

Another section of photo enthusiasts who are the family photographers. They and their camera will together attend the family functions though the invitation is for them only. They will be reach the functions before time and leave only when the functions gets over. And without failure they will ensure to mail the photos to all family and friends and will upload on orkut or facebook. Such people are social, friendly and represent the aam-aadmi of great Indian society.

There exists another breed of people who will click randomly without any thought and without any motive. Anything, anytime and anywhere they can click. Only thing is that subject should capture their imagination. Such people are creative and instant in action and reaction; usually they are on early stages of professional growth curve and have a great sense of independence.

And with more and more advancement of technology and opening of society to new ideas and thoughts, we should be seeing more photos talking their stories to us. Each one reflecting a time which someone found worthy of freezing to revisit again to be at his or her roots.

God's Gate Keeper

In Frame : Rani. Do we need to say who she is ? Rani is the elephant at Manarkul Vinayagar Temple at Pondicherry (Pondy) whom one can see the entrance of the temple. She has been trained to shower blessings on devotees who offer her money and eatables especially banana. On festivals she is beautifully decorated with colorful usually red and golden yellow robes and cloth sheets and carries the idols of Lord Ganesha along with the religious processions which passes through prominent streets of Pondy notable among them is JN Sreat and MG Road. Clicked in Aug 2008 at Manarkul Temple, Pondy during my first visit to the temple.

Change Agents In Our Society

Did you share yourself today ? Times Life : 2 May, 2010-05-18 In this artcle Indrani Rajkhowa Banerjee brings into life a very inspiring account of ordinary people who are amazingly trying to create a difference in lives of those to whom small things we never care of can bring a lot of difference. Consider few instance, taken from the said article and other sources: Someone in Mumbai distributes footwear at traffic signals to barefoot people, another man collects the leftover food at weddings to feed hungry kids, in Delhi a gentleman distributes drinking water in shanties of west Delhi, another person never leaves home without packets of glucose biscuits for poor kids, a young journalist instead of visiting church every sunday religiously visits nearby home for aged people and spends her time with them………… A guy collects rickety and torn out bicycles and repairs them and gives them to school kids who otherwise would have dropped as parents are reluctant to send kids far away to schoo...
